I make sketches whenever I find something inspiring and touching. Those moments filter through my mind and create a small world in my sketch book.

Maya started to speak in English since last week. As if English language had been stucked in her throat and suddenly came out .
I just had a talk with the teacher a few weeks ago that Maya hasn't spoken English in sentence at school. But now I worry rather how much longer she will keep speaking Japanese to me... (Polish is in danger already!)
Her power to learn amazed me again. Kids are really like sponge and no limitation! They have infinite possibility inside.

Morning walk

Daylight saving time has just ended yesterday. I can also feel winter in the air. Wind is getting colder day by day.
I often take a walk by myself in the park, after sending Maya to school in the morning. It became a very important time for me. So many things TO DO are waiting for me at home, but during this 15 min., I'm free from them and get some inspiration for the day.

Tuesday, November 1, 2011

We went for a afternoon walk to a near-by trail on the hill. There was a nice view on houses on hills. We played with echoes a little bit. Maya's shout reflected off the hills and we could clearly hear the reflection of it. Nature is so playful and fun!

asked me, "Where is Anpanman world? How can I go there?". I see she thinks there is a country those characters really live, like there is Japan and Poland. She knows the images in picture books are drawings, but the images in animation are real to her.
As I had studied and worked as an animator for many years, this is the best compliment for us who create animation. I still remember the excitement I had when my characters moved in the screen for the first time, as they are alive. Animation is very magical. I'm so happy to share this excitement with my daughter and kids all over the world. I hope this excitement will always push animators to create better and more inspirational animation films!

I just want to share this inspirational video that one of my friends shared on Facebook. I'm so touched and inspired, so let me share it with you. This message is what I always want to express through my art. I hope you'll enjoy it and have a wonderful day...

San Francisco doesn't have four seasons like in Japan. But still, there are more fallen leaves now than other time. Maya enjoys stepping on fallen leaves on the sidewalk and loves the sound! Something about the sound... it is always fascinating!

Daddy Tree

Playing with Daddy means jumping and climbing on him. She enjoys being lifted up so high and feeling like flying. It mush be fascinating to see the world from that hight.
But she is no a small baby anymore... It is pretty heavy to carry her up like that. Jim goes to gym every week, in order to keep his body in good shape for Maya!

A Crow

Almost every morning, we find a crow on the street near Maya's school where I park our car.
It's been more than a month since her kindergarden had started. I wrote about her first day of school here. Since then, she had up and down... Now Maya seems to be adjusted to her new life finally and she enjoys going to school everyday.
This crow have been watching her good and bad days, too. He became our friend in the morning. Our morning start with his Caw Caw sound.

I'm enjoying Indian Summer!
We went to Samuel P. Taylor State Park for hiking yesterday. We took an easy trail in Redwood forest. We found one really old Redwood tree. Most of old trees were cut down by pioneers. Redwoods we see today are the ones which grew after that. This old tree suffered by wildfire and has a huge hole that three of us easily fit in. But it is still alive. Young Redwood trees are growing out of the same root and surround the old tree.
It looked to me that young trees are protecting the old tree from human, saying "Don't cut down our Grandpa! Instead, you may come inside of him and feel his energy!"

Cat Master

Indoor cats are usually very lazy. They will take nap all day long. But, one or twice a day, there is a time that their wild side shows up. Not much they can do in small rooms, though. One of our cats, named Flip, dashes from the end of the bedroom and jump up on the cat structure in the living room as fast as he can, as if he is hunting a mouse!
Maya respects him for his speed and jump. She follows him to run as fast as he does and jump on the sofa as light as he does. Then, Maya looks at him with admiration and Flip the cat look at her in triumph.

Baby Teeth

Recently, I heard from some of Maya's friends that they lost their front teeth. So I expected that Maya's teeth will be wobbling soon. Maya had a Dentist check up yesterday. The Dentist found that her two front teeth are already wobbling a little! I also saw two new teeth are growing underneath them on XRay pictures.
Thank you, Front Baby Teeth, for helping Maya to bite so many delicious food since she was 6 months! Hang in there a little bit more and Teeth fairy will come to take you!

When we organized our rooms last weekend, I found my favorite books from my childhood which I had brought from Japan a few years ago. The title is "Chiisai Momo-chan (Tiny Momo-chan)" written by Moyoko Matsutani. It is in series and I have 5 of them. They are chapter books, but it is written so well that 5 year-old kids can enjoy them. I enjoyed them when I was 4 or 5. Now Maya is enjoying them so much. 40 year-old me still enjoy it!
The books are over 30 year-old. The pages of the books turned yellow and dusty. But the story inside is as flesh as when I was 5. That's the way great books are.

Peeking in

I've just come home, after sending Maya to the first day of Kindergarden!
Maya seemed fine and understanding what it going to happen today. But when we got to the school and saw the crowd of students, she became nervous. Then her teacher called students to come into the classroom. Maya bursted into tears and resisted to go into the classroom. It took a while for her to calm down. After a while, she stopped crying and walked into the classroom by herself.
After PTA gathering, me and husband came back to her classroom and peeked in from a small window on the door. What we saw was Maya was sitting quietly and drawing nicely. We were so relieved! Only funny thing was Maya was still wearing her jacket inside the room, which is very rare... Perhaps, she was too shy to ask her teacher where to hang her jacket...

It is always more painful to see someone is in pain than yourself is in pain. Especially, seeing your child is in pain is the most difficult thing as a parent.
One day, after we were playing with dolls, she suddenly started to cry and said her friends didn't want to play together with her today. It is a small thing, but it was a big thing for her and staying in her mind like a heavy stone for a whole day.
If I could, I will protect her from any kind of pain. But it is impossible. She needs to face it and overcome it by herself. But, at least, I want to be next to her in that moment and comfort her as much as I can, until someday she will grow up and won't need my comfort any more.

Sun Bread

One of me and Maya's favorite books is Sun Bread by Elisa Kleven. The story is about the baker who makes a huge Sun-shaped bread on a cold cloudy day. And the sun comes out to eat the delicious bread. On the back of the book, there is a recipe of Sun Bread.
It was a cold and cloudy day and nothing to do. So we decided to make our own Sun Bread to share with the sun. By the time the bread was ready, the sun really started to peek out of thick clouds! Maya was so excited and went outside to throw a piece of bread to the sun!

Giggling Man

Haven't you experienced you have hard time to stop giggling, when you shouldn't giggle?
According to Maya, there is a giggling man in our stomach. That's why you cannot help laughing, even though you know you shouldn't. It is not your fault. It is the giggling man in your stomach's fault!

Big Empty Tent

We've just come back from camping at Del Valle regional park, the same camping site as last summer. Last year, one of her friends slept in our tent, but Maya didn't have courage to stay overnight. This time, Maya did the first sleep over in her friend's tent, together with her stuffed animal, pillow and blanket!!!
My husband was very excited about camping again and bought a new big tent and mattress for us to sleep comfortably. It turned out to be too big for two of us, me and my husband........ It looked so empty without Maya. It was cold and long night for us...
Maya seemed to have enjoyed the adventure and grow up a little bit again.

Del Valle regional park

At the farm

We had a trip to a goat farm in Pescadero during this long weekend. It is one hour drive from San Francisco.
Maya was so excited to see goats, but her first word when we got out of our car was "Stinks~!" Yes, it is a part of farm experience! We took farm tour, so we were able to see and touch their goats closely. Maya was running around with goats, feeding them and hugging them. We had a great time.
It was great to get out of city life for me, too. Living in country side has been my dream since my childhood. Now I really want to realize it!

Big Backpack

Maya just graduated from preschool and she turned five. She is getting ready for kindergarden!
We got her a new backpack for kindergarden. Compared to the backpack she used for preschool, the new one is huge! When she carries it on her back, it looks like the backpack is running...

The energy of children

My mother is visiting from Japan. She's been suffering from depression for a long time. She lost her emotions, because of her sickness and medication. But, only when she plays with Maya, she makes smile that I remember from my childhood.
Kids are full of energy and their pure energy will spread to the people around them. Kids just want to be happy in every moment. So they know the way to open the minds of those who closed themselves from everything around them.
I feel so happy to hear the laughter of Maya and my mother at home.

Recently, I had two events that made me think about our thoughts.
Frist one happened at the restaurant. Maya, all the sudden, wanted to draw the hamster at her preschool. She couldn't wait until she gets home, so she started to draw on a paper napkin. After we went home, she draw it on the paper. Maya gave the drawing to the preschool teacher next day. Surprisingly, the hamster passed away on the day Maya draw the picture. The teacher was amazed that the way she drew was exactly how the grave looks like....
Another time, in the morning, Maya looked outside and "Hi~!" to her friend who went to Japan for vacation. I told her that your friend is in Japan, so she cannot hear you. Then Maya told me "But if I think about her, my thought will reach her." without any doubt.
Thoughts are invisible, but it doesn't mean that they don't exist. Like radio waves, they are in the air. It is a powerful tool for communication. These events assured me of my believe about the power of our thoughts.

Big 40

I had my 40th birthday last week. My friends secretly organized a surprise party for me! I walked into the playground without knowing anything. Then I saw the big banner saying "Happy BIG 40, Chiaki!"!!! They even prepared a homemade princess birthday cake! Though I was embarrassed of attention by strangers at the playground, I was so touched and brought me to tears...
I'm very grateful to have such a nice friends. I'm sure a lot of happiness will be waiting for me in my 40s life! Thank you, my friends!

On the way to the preschool, we sometimes pass by a homeless guy. He always walks on a nice street in a quiet residential neighborhood, pushing a cart which is full of his stuff.
The other day, Maya asked me why he always push his cart. I answered that he doesn't have money to have a place to stay, so he needs to stay on the street. Maya seemed confused a little and said "We have a lot of money, so we are fine to stay at our house (Correction: We don't have a lot of money and it is just a small apartment...).
Maya grew up enough to ask me that kind of question... I need to be prepared for her tough questions now.

Heidi's meal

Heidi, the Japanese animation version (storyboarded by Hayao Miyazaki) made in 70s, is one of the most influential character in my childhood. I still love this animation series, so I have the whole DVD set at home!
Now, Maya is influenced by Heidi, after watching the DVDs. She requested to have the meal like Heidi. Melting cheese on bread and milk on a bowl. I don't know why, but this simple meal looks so delicious!

Slow life

My job got slow down now, so my mind is slowing down, too.
Since Maya is able to walk longer now, we walked to her preschool one morning. On the way, we found so many flowers on the sidewalk we haven't noticed when we drive by. So we had a little bit of a biology class.
I mentioned in one of the posts that I don't like to drive a car and I enjoy biking with her. But this time we were even slow down to walking. The slower our life is, the more we appreciate small things in everyday life.

Maya had been sick for a week. The hardest part for me when she is sick is to give medicine to her. It used to take 3 hours until she agrees to take Tylenol... Now, with help of Elmo, it became a little easier. Since she watched one of the Sesame street videos called Elmo visits the doctor, Elmo became her best friend when she is sick.
Using Elmo doll, I need to do a little play for Maya to take medicine. All other dolls cheer her while she takes medicine from Elmo.... It is annoying, but it works. So I need to do this play every time she takes medicine.
I'm SO glad that Maya recovered!

Love & Peace Inside

I found a nice song on YouTube. It is sung by a Japanese popular pop group called SMAP. I wish if they are better at singing... But the lyric is so nice.

Love & Peace Inside? (The link to YouTube)

"So many people wish peace in the world, but why don't people end wars?"
Right after we talked about it, we started a fight for a trifling matter.
Then, we were so upset that we stopped talking to each other.
We don't look like the ones who wish peace in the world.

We realized that our hearts are our world.
Our world that never stop fighting is the reflection of our hearts that never stop fighting.

If I change myself for better, the world will change for better, too.
We can bring peace to the world like that, in the way that nobody has ever imagined.
I'm going to change myself and I promise myself that I'll become the one who never have a fight for a trifling matter.
So I'll always ask myself,
"Do I have Love & Peace inside me?

We had a trip to Chicago for my husband's family gathering last week, for the first time in 2 years. Me and my husband made a brief visit to the cafe run by my younger brother-in-law. I've known him since he was a little boy. So it is amazing to see he is a musician, a father of a 2 year-old son and a cafe owner!
Cafe Mustache is very cool and fun place to have a cup of coffee. They also have live performances by local and national musician every weekends.
He and his wife inspired me a lot that it is possible to make living by what you really want to do, by hardworking and being creative.

Dzia Dzia

My father-in-law was visiting us from Chicago for a week. He is very quiet and not so social. So I was afraid that Maya will get really shy in front of him. But, in contrary, Maya had been so friendly to him from the beginning! She hugged Dzia Dzia (Grandpa in Polish) and sit on his lap....
When Babcia (Grandma in Polish) visited us, it took a while for Maya to be friend with her, even though Babcia is very friendly and cheerful... Maybe Dzia Dzia's quiet nature made her feel secure? Anyway, Dzia Dzia had a great time here!

My good friend who is an owner of a beauty salon in Tokyo asked me to create an illustration for the charity sale at her salon for the victims of the recent quake and Tsunami in Japan. It was a great opportunity to use my talent for people in Japan. (Thank you, Yoko!)
I hope the seeds in my illustration will bring a little bit of hope and happiness to them.
