Dress warm!

It's been really cold in San Francisco. We are used to cold San Francisco "summer", but not cold "winter"... Our heater is on for all day. Hanna likes her warm winter had that Maya used to wear.

今年のサンフランシスコの冬は、とっても寒いです。寒い”夏”には慣れているけど、寒い”冬”には慣れていない私たち。。。毎日ヒーターガンガンかけています。はなは、マヤのお下がりの毛糸の帽子がお気に入りです。

Acorn

Inspired by My neighbor Totoro, Hana is fascinated by acorns. She collects them when she finds it on the street. She takes them in the bag with her. Sometimes she sleeps holding them at night. Then, she cries in the morning, "Where are acorns?" Taking out the blanket from her bed,  here we find a few acorns sleeping in the bed!

はなはトトロの映画が大好きで、どんぐりが大ブームです。道でドングリを見つけては持ち帰るので、うちにどんぐりコレクションがたまるばかり。。。大切に自分のバッグに入れてお出かけに持っていったりしてます。たまに、夜どんぐりを握りしめたまま寝てしまうこともあります。朝になって、「どんぐりは〜！？」と、一緒に寝ていたことを忘れて泣き出すので、お布団の中を探してみると、ぬくぬくのベッドで眠っているどんぐりたちを見つけるのです。

Santa in the car!

Last week, we were driving on the street. When I looked through the rear view mirror, I found a Santa Claus-looking old guy in the car behind us! He wore a black clothes and a baseball cap, but he couldn't hide his  beautiful white long beard... I told Maya that Santa is behind us. She looked back and was so surprised. Then, we guessed that he came to check all the kids in San Francisco are being good or not secretly! So Maya behaved very nice in the car, while the car was behind us. ^^

先週、運転しているとき、ふとバックミラーを見ると、後ろの車にサンタクロースのようなおじいさんが乗っているのに気づきました。いつもの赤い服ではなく、黒い服に野球帽をかぶっていましたが、真っ白な長〜いおひげは隠せません！まやにサンタさんが後ろの車にいるよと言うと、まやは振り向いてビックリしていました。私たちは、きっとサンタさんは、サンフランシスコの子供達がいい子にしているか内緒で見に来たんだねと話しました。その後、その車が見えなくなるまで、まやはやや緊張した様子で静かになり、とってもいい子でした！＾＾

Autumn Gift

This scene caught my eyes this morning, while I was driving back from Maya's school. A small girl had a big leaf on her hands and was giving it to her friend on the street. I guessed it was her great found this morning and she wanted to share it with her friend...
I notice that children love to give. Almost anything can be a gift, when they feel strongly about it. They love to make someone happy with their gifts. Even the mothers of these children had smile on their faces.
The innocence of children quickly spread around them and warms up the hearts of everyone around.

今朝車を運転していると、この風景が目に入ってきました。道ばたで小さな女の子が大きな葉っぱをお友達にあげようとしているとことでした。この女の子にとって、この大きな葉っぱを見つけたのは朝の大きな出来事で、きっとお友達とこの喜びを分かち合いたかったのでしょう。
子供って何かをプレゼントするのが大好き。その子が大切に思っている物だったら、何でもプレゼントになってしまいます。そして、それをあげた相手が笑顔になるのととっても喜びます。この子供たちのお母さんたちも、つられてニッコリしていました。
子供の純粋さは、すぐに周りの人たちに伝わって、みんなの心を温めてくれるのです。

The Harvest Moon

In Asia, people celebrate the full moon in autumn. Maya learned at her Japanese After school that September 30 is the harvest moon this year. She wished the day will be nice weather without typical fog in San Francisco. Yes, it was a gorgeous day and we saw a beautiful full moon! It was so big and bright. We sang a moon song in Japanese and looked at the moon through a binocular. We appreciate this special night given by nature and enjoy the bright moon light.

まやが日本語のアフタースクールで、今年の中秋の名月は９月３０日だと教えてもらい、「その日は天気がよくなりますように！」とお祈りしていました。すると、ずっと続いていた霧が晴れてとっても良いお天気になり、大きくて立派な十五夜お月様を見ることができました。まやと「でーたー、でーたー、つーきがー」と振り付きで歌い、双眼鏡でじっくりと観察しました。自然が私たちにくれた特別な夜に感謝して、電気を消して月の光を楽しみました。

Bubble in the rain

We had a great time in Japan and back to San Francisco. Next a few posts will be the sketches of my memory from Japan.

June is a rainy month in Tokyo area. I'm not used to hot and humid summer now, so I was glad to have cool rainy days. Maya was a little bit disappointed by rain, but she still enjoyed it. Stepping out of the front door, she was blowing soap-bubbles. She said, "Bubbles and rain drops are playing together!"

日本で楽しい時過ごし、サンフランシスコに戻ってきました。これからいくつかのポストは、日本での思い出のスケッチになると思います。

関東地方は梅雨でした。蒸し暑い日本の夏に耐えられない体になってしまったので、少し肌寒いくらいの雨の日々にホッとしていました。マヤは雨降り続きでがっかりしていましたが、それでも子供は楽しみを見つけます。玄関をでた軒下でシャボン玉をふいて、「シャボン玉と雨が一緒に遊んでいるよ！」といってたのしんでいました。

Cherry flower petals

There is a cherry tree in the courtyard of the preschool Maya had graduated last year. She still goes there three times a week for Japanese after school program. So this it third year for her to see cherry blossom of the tree. I wonder how many kids this tree has seen by now? Kids graduate the preschool and after school each year and new kids come in, but this tree remains the same. Every year, it gives pretty pink petals for them to see and play with.

マヤが去年まで通っていたプリスクールの庭の真ん中に八重桜の木が一本あります。マヤは今も週三回アフタースクールに通っています。この桜の花を見るのは今年で三年目。この木は、どれだけ多くの子供たちを見守ってきたのだろう。子供たちはプリスクールやアフタースクールを卒業して、そしてまた新しい子供たちが入園して、、、でもこの木はかわらずここにいる。そして、毎年、子供たちに満開の桜の花を見せて、花びらで遊べるように散っていくのです。

Magnolia

In San Francisco, there are so many flowers blooming even in winter. Especially in Golden Gate Park. Among them, the most outstanding one is Magnolia. Large and white flowers are so beautiful. The tree is relatively thin in relationship with the size of its flowers and buds. But it looks light like snow. She must be the queen of winter flowers.

ここサンフランシスコでは、冬でもたくさんの花が咲いています。特にゴールデンゲートパークの中には、数えきれないほどの花が咲いています。その中でも際立って美しいのはマグノリアです。大きな白い花がとってもきれい。木自体は細いのですが、つぼみと花は釣り合いがとれないくらい大きいのです。でも重さは感じさせず、雪が積もっているように清楚です。この花が冬の花の王女さまに違いないと思いました。

Leaves

San Francisco doesn't have four seasons like in Japan. But still, there are more fallen leaves now than other time. Maya enjoys stepping on fallen leaves on the sidewalk and loves the sound! Something about the sound... it is always fascinating!

サンフランシスコは日本のように四季がありませんが、やはり今の時期は他のときよりも落ち葉が多いです。マヤは歩道に落ちている葉をバリバリ踏むのを楽しんでいます。あのバリバリっていう音、快感ですよね〜！

Buds on the tree

Since the quake hit Japan, I have been feeling down, seeing negative news and photos.

When we were outside, Maya suddenly said "there are buds on the tree! Let's go to see closer." and began singing a Japanese song about buds on the tree. I guess she sings the song at the preschool everyday and teachers might show kids buds on the tree, when they take a walk.

When we took a closer look, there are small buds on the tree which looks like a bare tree from the distance.

It's a sign of spring. And spring is certainly coming, even in Japan.

震災の後、耳に入ってくるのは嫌なニュースと写真ばかりで、落ち込んでしまう毎日です。

そんな時、マヤが突然「あの木、木の芽があるよ！見に行こう!」と言い出しました。そして、木の芽の歌を歌い出しました。きっとプリスクールで毎日歌っていて、お散歩の時にでも先生が木に生えて来た木の芽を子供たちに見せたに違いありません。

遠くから見ると、はっぱのない裸の木の様でしたが、近くで見ると小さく膨らんだ木の芽が確かについていました。これは春の兆しですね。そして、日本にも春はもうすぐやって来ます。

Happy Valentine's Day!

It's been very nice weather for a month or so in San Francisco. So I all forgot that it is still winter. Today rain came back. Real spring is not here yet.

約１ヶ月ほど春のようないい天気が続いていたので、すっかりまだ冬である事を忘れていました。今日は雨模様。本物の春はまだですね。

LOVEに包まれてた暖かいバレンタインデーになりますように！

Dear Santa

Maya is counting down for Christmas to come for the first time in her life. This year, she fully understands what Christmas is about. Well, just as the day Santa Clause will bring a present...

When I was a child, my mother told me to put a letter to Santa on the window. I remember I used to put a letter on the window and wait for Christmas. So Maya is doing the same now.

Next several years are so precious time for my family. We can purely enjoy Christmas. Someday when she ask me "Is there really a Santa Clause?", I want to read her my favorite essay about Christmas.

マヤは、今年初めてクリスマスというのが何なのか理解して（サンタさんが、プレゼントを持って来てくれる日という意味ですが、、、）クリスマスが来るのを心待ちにしています。

私が子供の頃、母がサンタさんにお手紙を書いて窓に貼っておけば、プレゼントを持って来てくれるよと教えてくれたので、毎年そうしてクリスマスを待っていました。マヤも今同じ事をしています。

これからの数年間は、私たち家族にとって、純粋にクリスマスを楽しむ事のできる貴重な時間だと思います。そして、マヤが「サンタさんて本当にいるの？」って聞いてくる日が来たら、私の大好きなこのクリスマスのお話をしてあげようと思います。

On the bike

We ride a bike to go to Maya's preschool almost everyday. 10 blocks to the preschool, so it is a little bit too short to go by car and too long to walk. It is quite challenging to bike uphill! But it is rewarding to feel clean morning air and see beautiful sky with Maya.

We found Sheep Clouds (Altocumulus cloud) the other day. In Japan, autumn has come when you find sheep clouds in the sky. I guess it is the same here in San Francisco. I was happy to feel the change of seasons in California.

私たちは、ほぼ毎日自転車で通園しています。うちから１０ブロックのところにプリスクールがあるので、車で行くほど遠くないし、歩きだと疲れてしまうので、自転車が丁度いいんです。登り坂をマヤを後ろにのせてこぐのは、ちょっときついですが、朝のさわやかな空気を感じたり、きれいな空をマヤと一緒に眺めたりする時間が大好きです。

この間、きれいな羊雲が空一面に広がっているのを見つけました。日本では、羊雲は秋が来たサインです。ここでも同じなのかな？四季のないカリフォルニアで季節の変化を感じられてちょっといい気分でした。

First Rain

We have been enjoying Indian Summer for a few weeks. But today it rained for the first time in this season. This is a sign of the end of short summer in San Francisco and the beginning of rainy winter.

For Maya, it was an exciting day! She got to wear rain boots, to hold her favorite umbrella and to play in puddles. When we went out, she run to puddles with a big smile.

Grown ups hate to step into puddles, but kids love to jump into puddles.... When is Maya going to stop enjoying rainy days....?

ここのところいいお天気が続き、インディアンサマーを楽しんでいましたが、今日はこの冬初めての雨が降りました。この雨は、短いサンフランシスコの夏に終わりを告げて、雨の多い冬の始まりを意味します。

マヤにとっては、待ちに待っていた雨です。だって、長靴を履いて、お気に入りの傘をさして、水たまりでピチャピチャ遊ぶの５月からずっと待っていたのですから、、、外に出ると、一目散に水たまりを見つけてピチャピチャしてにんまりしてました。

子供の頃は、水たまりに入りたくて大きな水たまりを探して歩いたものだけど、いつの間にか水たまりを避けて歩くようになりますね。マヤが水たまりを避けて、雨の日を楽しまなくなる日がいつか来ちゃうんだな、、、

Camping

We had a camping trip together with other families from preschool to Del Valle regional park in Livermore. It was first camping for Maya and most of the kids. Also it was first overnight trip together. So all the kids were excited to play until it became dark. They got flash lights on their hands and visited each other's tents. One of Maya's friends came to our tent to sleep. It became a wonderful summer memory for all of us.

プリスクールのお友達の家族とLivermoreにあるDel Valle regional park にキャンプに行ってきました。子供たちにとって初めてのキャンプ、初めてのお泊まり。みんな普段の生活から抜け出して大興奮でした。暗くなってきたら、懐中電灯を片手に、それぞれのテントを回ってお客さんごっこをしてました。お友達のひとりが「マヤちゃんと一緒のテントで寝る！」と言い出し、私たちのテントで寝ることになったり、とっても楽しい夏の思い出ができました。
