My cat, Flip

One of my cats, Flip, passed away yesterday. He was 15-year-old, but acted like a 5-year-old kid. He has truly believed that he is one of my children. So he would compete to get my attention with Maya and Hanna. He would get upset if I don't serve his dinner at the same time with them. When we all were having dinner, he alway sit on the cat structure being at our eye level to join our conversation.
Several days ago, suddenly he refused to eat, even his favorite milk. It was really difficult to see him getting weaker and weaker day by day. But we did our best to keep him comfortable at home, not at hospital, in his last moments.
On his last night, I slept next to him on the floor. Around 2 am, Hanna was crying at her bed. So I went to her and stayed until he calmed down. When I came back to Flip, he coughed loudly several times. My husband petted him gently and I covered him with a warm blanket. I think that was his last breath.
The next day was unusually sunny from early morning. Flip loved being in morning sunshine. I usually open the blinds for him when I wake up. But I realized he is not coming to the window this morning...
I'm sure he is now laying on the cloud conformably and purring in the beautiful sunshine. And when he wakes up, he will check us how we are doing and anything fun is going on in my family...

うちの２匹の猫の一匹、フリップが、昨日天国に逝ってしまいました。１５歳のおじいちゃんでしたが、まるで５歳のやんちゃ坊主のようで、私の子供だと信じて疑っていなかった思います。だから、マヤとハナにライバル意識をいつも持っていて、夕ご飯の時に二人と同じ時間にご飯がもらえないとすねてしまいました。御飯時には、ダイニングテーブルのすぐ脇にある猫の台の上でじっとこっちをみて、私たちの会話に参加している気分に浸っていました。
ところが、突然数日前から何も食べなくなってしまったのです。大好きでいつもおねだりしていた牛乳さえも見向きもしなくなってしまったのです。日に日にやつれていくのを見るのはとても辛いことでしたが、病院ではなく、一番安心するおうちで、ゆっくり最後の日々を過ごしてほしかったので、うちで介護をすることにしまいした。
最後の夜に、私は床にマットを敷いてフリップの隣で寝ることにしました。夜中の２時頃、ハナが泣いたのでハナのベットに行って様子を見て戻ってくると、フリップは何回か大きく咳をしました。旦那が優しく体を撫でてやり、私が温めるためにブランケットをかけてやりました。たぶん、それが最後の息だったのだと思います。
次の朝は、稀に見るいい天気で、朝から日の光が窓から差し込んでいました。フリップは、朝日を浴びるのが大好きだったので、いつも朝起きるとブラインドを開けるのが私の日課になっていました。けれども、ブラインドを開けても元気に駆けてくるフリップの姿はありません。。。
きっと今フリップは、雲の上の特等席で暖かな日の光を浴びてうたた寝していることでしょう。そして、目が覚めたら、私たちが何をしているか、何か面白そうなことを私たちがやっているか空の上から見つめていることでしょう。。。
フリップ、ずっと一緒だよ。

Baby sitter

I'm a very lucky mom, because I have two baby sitters at home. One is Maya. The other is one of my cats, Flip. As I wrote before, He is very jealous about Hanna getting all attention. But it looks like he is slowly accepting her and even he sometimes babysits her. He sits in front of her, showing his tail, and wags his tail for her to play. He is such a nice and friendly cat!

私はとってもラッキーな母だなと思います。なぜなら家に二人もベビーシッターさんがいてくれるからです。ひとりはマヤ。もう一人は、猫のフリップ。前に書いたように、フリップは、ハナがみんなの注目を独り占めしているのをよく思っていませんが、最近ハナのことを受け入れ始めたようです。たまに、ハナの目の前に後ろ向きで座って、しっぽを動かしてあやしてくれるのです。大人になったね〜、フリップ。

Attention

The birth of Hanna was a big event for our family. For our cats, too. Flip, one of our cats, is a kind of cat who always needs attention. It was a routine to mew when anyone come close to his structure and be petted. But now Hanna's bassinet is in front of his structure! All of us greet come to Hanna, but not to him.
He is so jealous! It was the same when Maya was a baby. Now they are good friends. So he needs to be patient to be friends with Hanna.

ハナの誕生は、私たちにとって一大イベントでしたが、うちの猫たちにとっても同じ事です。特にフリップは、とっても甘えん坊でいつでも注目されていたいタイプの猫なんです。大好きな台の上で「にゃ〜！」と一声鳴けば、みんなフリップをなでてあげていました。ところが、ハナのベッドをその前に置いてしまったので、みんなハナのところで止まってしまい、フリップが幾ら鳴いても注目されるのはハナばかり、、、なので、フリップにとっては辛い日々です。。。マヤが赤ちゃんだった時も全く同じでしたが、今では大の仲良し。だからハナと友達になるのは、後数年我慢するしかありません！がんばれ、フリップ！

Hummingbird

I see a hummingbird almost everyday when I get into the car in my garage. The bird is on the very top of the tree next door. He is so light that he can perch on the top of a very thin branch, while other birds find a more stable branch. He enjoys swinging with wind, then he flies away with wind.

ガレージにある車に乗りこむたびに、隣の庭の木のてっぺんにいる ハチドリを見かけます。他の鳥は安全な太めの枝に止まりますが、ハチドリはとっても軽いので木の一番上の一番細い枝の先に止まることができます。その鳥は風が吹いていても枝の上でゆらゆら揺れるのを楽しんで、その風に乗ってどこかに飛んでいきます。

Maya's Dog, Lady

Maya's dream is to take a walk with her own dog. But we have two cats at home, so it won't come true for a while.
She got a stuffed animal dog, Lady (from Lady & the Tramp) from Santa last Christmas. Since them Lady is her dog. Lady is treated differently from rest of her dolls. She has her own bed and bowl. The other day, she tied a rope on her collar and went to take a walk outside, though she doesn't walk... Maya made her dream come true!

マヤの最近の夢は、自分の犬とお散歩に行く事です。でも、うちには２匹の猫がいるので当分かないません。
クリスマスにサンタさんから「わんわん物語」のレイディーのぬいぐるみをもらいました。それから、レイディーはマヤの犬になり、他のぬいぐるみとは違う扱いを受けています。レイディー用のベッドとお皿もあります。この前、レイディーの首輪に縄をつけて、外にお散歩に行きました。（歩きませんが、、、）マヤは自分の夢を見事に叶えたのでした！

A Crow

Almost every morning, we find a crow on the street near Maya's school where I park our car.
It's been more than a month since her kindergarden had started. I wrote about her first day of school here. Since then, she had up and down... Now Maya seems to be adjusted to her new life finally and she enjoys going to school everyday.
This crow have been watching her good and bad days, too. He became our friend in the morning. Our morning start with his Caw Caw sound.

マヤの小学校の近くに車を止めて外に出ると、ほぼ毎朝一匹のカラスに会います。
キンダーガーデンが始まってもう一ヶ月以上になります。ここに初日の事は書きましたが、それからもこの一ヶ月いろいろ大変でした！最近やっと新しい生活に慣れて来たようで、毎日学校に行くのを楽しみにしています。
このカラスも、マヤのこの一ヶ月の涙も笑顔も見ていたのでしょうか？今ではすっかり朝のお友達になり、「かーかー」という元気のいいカラスの鳴き声で私たちの朝は始まります。

Cat Master

Indoor cats are usually very lazy. They will take nap all day long. But, one or twice a day, there is a time that their wild side shows up. Not much they can do in small rooms, though. One of our cats, named Flip, dashes from the end of the bedroom and jump up on the cat structure in the living room as fast as he can, as if he is hunting a mouse!
Maya respects him for his speed and jump. She follows him to run as fast as he does and jump on the sofa as light as he does. Then, Maya looks at him with admiration and Flip the cat look at her in triumph.

室内育ちの猫たちは、とってもぐーたらで、一日中昼寝しているようです。でも、一日に１、２回、野生の本能が現れるときがあります。狭い室内ではあまりできる事はありませんが、うちの一匹の猫、フリップはベッドルームの端っこから全速力で駆けて、リビングにある猫の台に飛び乗るゲームをやります。まるで獲物を捕まえる時のように！
マヤは、そんなに速く走れて、軽々とジャンプするフリップのことを尊敬しています。フリップが駆け出すと、マヤもそれに続いて駆け出し、同じようにソファの上にジャンプして着地します。そして、マヤは、尊敬の眼でフリップを見て、フリップは勝ち誇ったようにマヤを見つめます。

At the farm

We had a trip to a goat farm in Pescadero during this long weekend. It is one hour drive from San Francisco.

Maya was so excited to see goats, but her first word when we got out of our car was "Stinks~!" Yes, it is a part of farm experience! We took farm tour, so we were able to see and touch their goats closely. Maya was running around with goats, feeding them and hugging them. We had a great time.

It was great to get out of city life for me, too. Living in country side has been my dream since my childhood. Now I really want to realize it!

この独立記念日の週末、私たちは、サンフランシスコから車で１時間ぐらいのところにある山羊の牧場に行ってきました。

動物好きのマヤは、山羊に会えるのを指折り数えて待っていましたが、牧場に着いての第一声は、「くさ〜い！」そうですよね。これも牧場体験の一部です、、、牧場ツアーに参加して、山羊たちのいる牧場に入り、自由に山羊たちに会う事ができました。マヤは、山羊たちと一緒になって駆け回り、草を食べさせたり、ハグしたり。とっても楽しい時間を過ごしました。

都会の生活から抜け出してこういう場所で時間を過ごすと、自然の中で暮らしたいという子供の頃からの夢がムクムクと膨らんできました。いつか必ず実現するぞ〜！

Cat's life

In the morning, we sometimes meet a cat walking on the fence next to the preschool. Kids find him and they are excited to report teachers about it. The cat just glances kids and goes on his way. Not like dogs, cats have their own lives. Human is not in the center of their lives. The freedom in cat's spirit is fascinating to human.

朝、プリスクールの隣の塀の上を歩く猫に出会う事があります。子供たちは猫を見つけて大喜びして先生に報告しにいきます。でも、猫の方は子供たちをちらっと横目で見て、どこに行くのかすたすたと歩いていってしまいます。

犬とは違って、人間は猫の生活の中心にはいなくて、その辺の気ままさが猫の魅力だと思います。

A new friend

A hamster came to Maya's preschool a few month ago. Kids were so curious about him from the beginning. But he was too scare to come out. Recently he finally adjusted to the new (noisy) environment and he is entertaining kids, running on the wheel and making his bed out of stuffings from a stuffed animal... One more mischievous student added to the preschool!

クリスマス前に、マヤのプリスクールに新しいハムスターのお友達がやって来ました。子供たちは大喜びでしたが、怖がってなかなか姿を見せてくれませんでした。最近ようやく新しい（騒々しい）環境に慣れて来たようで、子供たちを楽しませてくれています。輪の中でエクササイズしたり、ぬいぐるみの中の綿を出してベッドにしたり、、、子供たちと同じぐらい（？）いたずら好きの生徒です。

Big Dog

I'm sure people outside of San Francisco are enjoying hot weather, but San Francisco becomes colder and colder approaching August... Last week was so cold that we could not stay in the playground for a few days. So one of Maya's friends invited her friends to her house after school. Her mother told us that they have a BIG dog. When we arrived, a BIG golden retriever came into the living room. Kids were excited to pet her. So we thought this is the dog she was talking about. But is was not! Later, she brought in a GIANT dog!!! It's called Great Dane. Compared to this one, the golden retriever lookes like a puppy...

７月も終わりに近づき、皆さん暑い夏を楽しんでいる事でしょう。でも、サンフランシスコは別です。信じないかもしれませんが、夏が来ると冬の様に寒い日々が続くのです。先週はとっても冷え込んで、公園で遊べないくらいだったので、マヤのお友達がおうちに招待してくれました。その子のお母さんが、「うちには大きな犬がいるのよ。」と言っていたので、子供たちは楽しみにしていました。おうちに着くと、大きなゴールデンレトリバーが入ってきたので、これがその大きな犬だとみんな思っていました。ところが、少し経つと、そのお母さんがもう一匹の巨大な犬を連れてきました！グレイトデンと言う種類の犬だそうですが、目の錯覚かと思うくらい、おっきい〜！この犬と比べると、ゴールデンレトリバーは子犬に見えます、、、

Excuse me...

We went for hiking to Tennessee valley trail in Mill Valley. It is very easy access from the city and a very easy trail, but you are away from noises of the civilization.

While we were hiking, I noticed a crowd of hikers standing in front of us. "Do you want to see a snake?", they called us. As we get close to them, we saw a beautiful snake crossing the trail. He slithered gracefully and proudly. One of the hikers told us that this snake is harmless and called Gopher Snake. We all were just standing there as if we are waiting at the traffic light, until the snake crossed the trail and hide in the bush.

ミルバレーのTennessee valley trailにハイキングに行きました。サンフランシスコから車で２０分位のところにありますが、一歩トレイルを歩き出すと都会の近くにいる事を忘れてしまうくらい静かで美しい景色が広がっています。

歩いて行くと、何人かのハイカーたちが道の真ん中に立っていました。「ヘビ見たい？」と、私たちに声をかけてきました。近くに行ってみると、一匹のヘビが道を横切っている所でした。ヘビは堂々と優雅にはっています。ひとりのハイカーの人が、このヘビは毒ヘビではなくGopher Snakeというんだと教えてくれました。私たち全員、ヘビが道を横切って草むらに姿を消すまで、赤信号で止まっている歩行者の様にじっとして、その美しいヘビを見つめました。

Greeting from a cat

We have two cats at home. They are brothers, but they have completely opposite personality. Flip is very friendly. Flap is extremely shy and doesn't like human, especially kids... So since Maya was born, Flap has been having very difficult life. He hides under the bed for a whole day until Maya goes to bed. But recently Maya began to understand Flap's personality, so she doesn't chase him that much any more. Flap started to feel more comfortable to be close to her. He even says Hi to Maya in cat's way. You know, cats never show their affection directly like dogs. Flap touches Maya's face with his tail and just walks by, even without eye contact. But we know this is the best expression of friendship by Flap!

うちで飼っている二匹の猫たちは、兄弟のくせに、正反対の性格をしています。フリップはとっても人懐っこい猫ですが、フラップは大の人間嫌い。特に子供は大嫌いなので、マヤが生まれてからは大変。マヤがベッドに入るまで、一日中ずっとベッドの下に隠れています。でも最近は、マヤも成長したので、あまり追いかけたりしなくなりました。フラップもその変化に気づき、マヤがおとなしくしてる時は近くに来るようになり、猫流の挨拶もしてくれるようになったのです。犬と違って、猫の挨拶はとってもさりげなく、通り過ぎる振りをしてしっぽでスルッとタッチします。でもこれは、フラップの精一杯の愛情表現なのです！

Gopher's castle

On sunny weekend, me, my husband and Maya went to Golden Gate Park for picnic. Coming out of our car, I found something staring at me on the ground. It was a gopher, not afraid of human at all! Just focused on his job pushing dirt out of his hole. Then we realized so many holes were around us. We must have been right on his huge castle. Having a castle in the middle of San Francisco? I'm so envious...

よく晴れた週末に、家族でゴールデンゲートパークにピクニックに行きました。車から降りた時、誰かの視線を感じたので、ふと下を見ると、一匹のほりねずみが穴から頭を出していました。人を怖がる様子は全然なく、土を自分の家から押し出す作業に一生懸命でした。三人で辺りを見回すと、土のかぶった穴がそこら中に点在してる事に気づきました。きっと私たちは、ほりねずみ御殿の真上に立っているんだわ！サンフランシスコの一等地に大きなお家を建てる事が出来るなんて、うらやましいです、、、

The world of Peter Rabbit

We checked out a dvd of "The world of Peter Rabbit and friends" from the nearby library. It is a beautiful animation video made by BBC.

I studied Traditional Animation, so I'm very picky about animation for kids.

But I loved it as much as my daughter, Maya, did!

They succeeded to keep the quality of the picture books and to make characters alive. After Maya watched it, she became Peter and pretended to eat imaginary carrots on our bed as an imaginary carrot field.I hope she will eat a REAL carrot like that, too!!!

近くの図書館で、ピーターラビットのDVDを借りてきました。

私は大学でアニメーションの勉強をしたので、子供向けのアニメーションにもうるさいのですが、このDVDはとても素晴らしいできです！娘のマヤと一緒になって夢中になってしまいました。

絵本の世界をそのまま映像にしてあって、ピーターたちの世界にぐいぐい引き込まれてしまいます。

見終わって、マヤは私たちのベッドをにんじん畑に見立て、ぴょんぴょん飛び回り、空想のにんじんをかじっていました。

本物のにんじんも食べてくれ〜！
