Animation

asked me, "Where is Anpanman world? How can I go there?". I see she thinks there is a country those characters really live, like there is Japan and Poland. She knows the images in picture books are drawings, but the images in animation are real to her.
As I had studied and worked as an animator for many years, this is the best compliment for us who create animation. I still remember the excitement I had when my characters moved in the screen for the first time, as they are alive. Animation is very magical. I'm so happy to share this excitement with my daughter and kids all over the world. I hope this excitement will always push animators to create better and more inspirational animation films!

マヤが、「アンパンマンの国ってどこにあるの？どうやったら行けるの？」と聞いてきました。世界に日本やポーランドがあるように、どこかに”アンパンマンの国”というのがあると思っているみたいです。絵本の中の絵は、誰かが描いた絵だとわかっていますが、アニメーションの世界はリアルだと思っているようです。
何年もアニメーションを勉強してアニメーターとして働いた者として、これは最高の褒め言葉だと思います。今でも、自分の描いたキャラクターが初めて画面の中で動いた時の感動は忘れません。アニメーションはとっても不思議な、魔法のようなアートだと思います。自分の娘がこんな風に魔法を感じてくれている事はとてもうれしいです。そしてこの気持ちが、これからもずっと世界中のアニメーターにもっと素敵なアニメーションを作り出す原動力となることでしょう。

Leaves

San Francisco doesn't have four seasons like in Japan. But still, there are more fallen leaves now than other time. Maya enjoys stepping on fallen leaves on the sidewalk and loves the sound! Something about the sound... it is always fascinating!

サンフランシスコは日本のように四季がありませんが、やはり今の時期は他のときよりも落ち葉が多いです。マヤは歩道に落ちている葉をバリバリ踏むのを楽しんでいます。あのバリバリっていう音、快感ですよね〜！

Daddy Tree

Playing with Daddy means jumping and climbing on him. She enjoys being lifted up so high and feeling like flying. It mush be fascinating to see the world from that hight.
But she is no a small baby anymore... It is pretty heavy to carry her up like that. Jim goes to gym every week, in order to keep his body in good shape for Maya!

お父さんと一緒に遊ぶという事は、お父さんに飛びつき、よじ上る事だと思っているマヤ。高い高いしてもらって、空を飛んでいるような気分になれるみたいです。そして、肩の上に乗って眺める世界はとっても魅力的なのでしょう。
でも、マヤはもう小さな赤ちゃんではなく、彼女を持ち上げて歩くのはとっても重労働になってきました。娘を喜ばすために、この幸せな時期が少しでも長く続くように、主人は週一回筋力トレーニングのためジムに通っているのです、、、

A Crow

Almost every morning, we find a crow on the street near Maya's school where I park our car.
It's been more than a month since her kindergarden had started. I wrote about her first day of school here. Since then, she had up and down... Now Maya seems to be adjusted to her new life finally and she enjoys going to school everyday.
This crow have been watching her good and bad days, too. He became our friend in the morning. Our morning start with his Caw Caw sound.

マヤの小学校の近くに車を止めて外に出ると、ほぼ毎朝一匹のカラスに会います。
キンダーガーデンが始まってもう一ヶ月以上になります。ここに初日の事は書きましたが、それからもこの一ヶ月いろいろ大変でした！最近やっと新しい生活に慣れて来たようで、毎日学校に行くのを楽しみにしています。
このカラスも、マヤのこの一ヶ月の涙も笑顔も見ていたのでしょうか？今ではすっかり朝のお友達になり、「かーかー」という元気のいいカラスの鳴き声で私たちの朝は始まります。

Redwoods

I'm enjoying Indian Summer!
We went to Samuel P. Taylor State Park for hiking yesterday. We took an easy trail in Redwood forest. We found one really old Redwood tree. Most of old trees were cut down by pioneers. Redwoods we see today are the ones which grew after that. This old tree suffered by wildfire and has a huge hole that three of us easily fit in. But it is still alive. Young Redwood trees are growing out of the same root and surround the old tree.
It looked to me that young trees are protecting the old tree from human, saying "Don't cut down our Grandpa! Instead, you may come inside of him and feel his energy!"

やっと来たインディアンサマーをエンジョイしています！
昨日、マリンにあるSamuel P. Taylor State Parkにハイキングに行きました。レッドウッドの森を歩いていると、際立って大きな古いレッドウッドの一本の木を見つけました。このような古いレッドウッドの殆どは開拓時代に伐採されてしまって、今見る事のできるレッドウッドは、その後に生えたものだそうです。この古い木は、山火事で大きな穴ができていて、私たち三人が楽に入れるほどでした。こんなに大きな穴があいているのにこの木はまだ生きていて、同じ根から若木が何本も生えています。
若い木たちがこの古い木を取り囲むように生えているのを見て、若い木たちがこんな風に私たちに言っているような気がしました。
「私たちのおじいちゃんを切り倒さないで！そのかわり、この穴に入っておじいちゃんのやさしさと生命力を感じてみなさい！」

Cat Master

Indoor cats are usually very lazy. They will take nap all day long. But, one or twice a day, there is a time that their wild side shows up. Not much they can do in small rooms, though. One of our cats, named Flip, dashes from the end of the bedroom and jump up on the cat structure in the living room as fast as he can, as if he is hunting a mouse!
Maya respects him for his speed and jump. She follows him to run as fast as he does and jump on the sofa as light as he does. Then, Maya looks at him with admiration and Flip the cat look at her in triumph.

室内育ちの猫たちは、とってもぐーたらで、一日中昼寝しているようです。でも、一日に１、２回、野生の本能が現れるときがあります。狭い室内ではあまりできる事はありませんが、うちの一匹の猫、フリップはベッドルームの端っこから全速力で駆けて、リビングにある猫の台に飛び乗るゲームをやります。まるで獲物を捕まえる時のように！
マヤは、そんなに速く走れて、軽々とジャンプするフリップのことを尊敬しています。フリップが駆け出すと、マヤもそれに続いて駆け出し、同じようにソファの上にジャンプして着地します。そして、マヤは、尊敬の眼でフリップを見て、フリップは勝ち誇ったようにマヤを見つめます。
