News: Valentine Cards and more

Hand-stamped Valentine card and other greeting cards are on sale at Chiaki's Orchard!

Setsubun

In Japan, we have Setsubun (Bean-Throwing Festival) on Feburary 3. At Maya's preschool, all the kids enjoy throwing beans to Oni, except Maya... Last year, she was so scared of Oni that she cried and was held by one of the teachers during the event. After coming back home, she found an illustration of smiling Oni somewhere and said, "I like this Oni!" Then I realized what makes her scary is his angry face! Not big red body nor horns.

Maybe, my angry face is more scary than a smiling Oni...

もうすぐ節分ですね。マヤのプリスクールでは、豆まきを毎年やります。去年、マヤは初めて豆まきをやりましたが、鬼が怖くて大泣きして、一粒も豆を投げられず園長先生にだっこされてました。家に帰って来てから、どこかでニコニコしてる鬼の絵を見つけて、「マヤこの鬼さん好きよ。」と言っていました。そこで気がついたのですが、怖いのは大きな赤い体でもなく、角でもなく、怒った顔なんですね。それなら、マヤにとって私の怒った顔は、ニコニコ顔の鬼よりも怖いのかな、、、？

Even Monkeys fall from trees...

Maya is usually shy and quiet. But, once she goes to the playground, she became a tomboy. Everyone is surprised by the gap of her two personalities!

Recently, she learn Monkey bars and showed me she can go all the way to the end. A few days later, she tried to show me again. Yet, this time she could not go more than 3 bars. Every time she tried, she fell at the same point... She was so frustrated and cried so hard...

It's OK. I'm sure you can make it tomorrow, my little monkey!

マヤは普段はとっても恥ずかしがりやでおとなしい子ですが、一旦公園に行くとおてんばになります。みんなその２つの性格のギャップに驚きます。

最近、うんていができるようになって、私に最後までひとりで渡れるのを見せてくれました。そして、その数日後、また見せてくれようとしたのですが、この日は３つ目のバーから先がどうしてもできず、なんどやってもそこまで行くと落ちてしまいました。マヤはくやしくて大泣き。

大丈夫、明日はまたきっとできるよ、小猿ちゃん！

A new friend

A hamster came to Maya's preschool a few month ago. Kids were so curious about him from the beginning. But he was too scare to come out. Recently he finally adjusted to the new (noisy) environment and he is entertaining kids, running on the wheel and making his bed out of stuffings from a stuffed animal... One more mischievous student added to the preschool!

クリスマス前に、マヤのプリスクールに新しいハムスターのお友達がやって来ました。子供たちは大喜びでしたが、怖がってなかなか姿を見せてくれませんでした。最近ようやく新しい（騒々しい）環境に慣れて来たようで、子供たちを楽しませてくれています。輪の中でエクササイズしたり、ぬいぐるみの中の綿を出してベッドにしたり、、、子供たちと同じぐらい（？）いたずら好きの生徒です。

Cordination

When Maya concentrate on something, her tongue sticks out! She was jumping to touch leaves on the tree the other day. She asked me to watch her, so I was watching. Every time she jumps, her tongue sticks out... I almost laughed at her. But she was so serious that I resisted laughing!

マヤが何かをやろうと集中すると、べろがでるんです！この間、気の枝の葉っぱに届くようにジャンプして、「見ていて」と言われたので見ていたんですが、それがおかしくて吹き出しそうになりました。でも、マヤは真剣なので必死でこらえましたよ！

News: Calendar 2011

Toward the end of last year, me and my illustrator friends got together and created our original calendar for 2011. It was so fun and inspiring to collaborate with such talented illustrators, Felicia Hoshino, Sansu and Ye Won Lee. We are planning to create more products together this year. Exciting~! The theme of our calendar is nature, season, character and food. Each of us made 3 images for various months.

This time, I made all of my images with hand stamping, without help of Photoshop. It was challenging, but I feel I made another step to explore my style.

去年の終わりに、仲の良いイラストレーターのお友達と一緒に２０１１年のカレンダーを制作しました。みんなとってもクリエイティブで、とっても楽しいプロセスでした。フェリーシア、サンスウ、イエウォン、どうもありがとう〜！カレンダーのイラストのテーマは、自然、季節、キャラクター、食べ物で、それぞれ３枚づつ担当しました。

今回、私はフォトショップに頼らず、すべて手でスタンプを押して作る手法のチャレンジしてみました。大変でしたが、また新たな道が開けたような気がします。
